Im Gegensatz zum elektrischen Blues aus Chicago z.B. basiert der großstädtische Rhythm 'n' Blues (R&B) nicht auf ursprünglich ländlichen Sielweisen. R&B war schon immer der Sound der großen Städte, eher beeinflusst vom Bigband-Sound eines Count Basie als vom Mississippi Delta Blues eines Robert Johnson. Zu den bedeutendsten Vertretern zählen u.a. Wynonie Harris, Eddie Vinson, Joe Liggins, Louis Jordan, Julia Lee, Paul Williams, Roy Brown, Jimmy Witherspoon, Big Joe Turner u.v.a.
