Prior to Clifton Chenier's arrival, zydeco was confined to Louisiana and South-East Texas, taken seriously by its practitioners and their audiences but passed over in the larger picture. Clifton was one of the piano accordion, a Cadillac of an instrument that gave him a wider selection of keys and the possibility of integrating other music forms like the blues into his repertoire. Zydeco's wide popularity can be laid mainly at the feet of Chenier and his 1954 recording of Cliftons's Blues and Louisiana Stomp.
