(2006 'CrossCut') (74:19/09) 'Recorded live at the Bay-Car Blues Festival, Grande-Synthe, France - April 28, 2006' - Die 'Princess of Rockin' Gospel Blues' aus Sagninaw im Bundesstaat Michigan war 2006 der Headliner beim alljährlichen 'Bay-Car' Festival an der französischen Atlantikküste. Wir haben ihr begeisterndes Konzert aufgenommen, gefilmt und als CD und DVD veröffentlicht. Wer Sharrie ein Mal 'live' erlebt hat wird mir zustimmen, dass sie wie kaum eine Zweite in der Lage ist, ein Publikum für sich zu begeistern. Leicht war es nicht, das französische Publikum aus der Reserve zu locken. Doch mit einigen wenigen Worten Französisch, eine ungeheuren Portion Charme und einer offenen, ehrlichen Ausstrahlung hat Sharrie auch diese Hürde genommen. Vorangetrieben von einer energiegeladenen international besetzten Band beginnt das Album mit einer Etta-James-Nummer; 'I'll Take You There' wurde zuerst von den Staple Singers aufgenommen, und die übrigen Songs hat Sharrie geschrieben. Mit viel Dynamik bewegt sich die Band zwischen Blues, der manchmal funky, dann wieder rockig daher kommt, und Soul, geprägt von Sharrie gospelgeschulter Stimme mit der unglaublichen Bandbreite. Sie ist eine überzeugende sympathische Entertainerin, die alles gibt. Und das merkt man. Selbst auf der CD, die übrigens gegenüber der DVD ein Bonusstück enthält, ist Sharries Ausstrahlung zu spüren. Noch deutlicher wird es bei der DVD (cvd 5002), wenn man sie wahrhaftig im Bild erlebt. Dazu ein sorgfältiger und ausgewogener 5.1. Mix für das Kinoerlebnis zu Hause. / The 'Princess of Rockin' Gospel Blues' from Saginaw, Michigan was headlining last year's edition of the annual 'Bay-Car' festival in the north of France. We have recorded and filmed her inspiring performance and have released an audio CD, and video DVD. If you have seen her 'live' before, I'm sure you will agree with me that she is one of the most impressive performers and entertainers. She knows how to 'get' the audience - although it was a tough job for her that particular night. But with a few words in French she finally got the crowd standing up and moving. Powered by her international touring band, the show starts off with a great rendition of Etta James' classic 'Tell Mama'. 'Ill take You There', originally recorded by the Staple Singers, is the only other tune not written by Sharrie herself. The remaining songs are originals, sometimes funky, sometimes hard-driving and rocking blues, always gospel-drenched and soulful, performed with intensity. The band delivers the perfect support for her music. The ryhthm section cooks, keyboards are wailing and mourning, and Lars is giving Sharrie what she needs: an expressive, powerful and sensible counterpart on stage. Even on the CD version you can feel the spirit. But of course it's a special treat to see her live on stage. Get yourself the DVD (cvd 5002), and you will experience one the finest blues and gospel vocalists this planet has to offer.
