Bei diesem Namen geht den meisten Bluesfans meiner Generation das Herz auf, war der Gitarrist (mit bürgerlichem Namen Michael Mann, * 1954) mit seiner unglaublich expressiven Spielweise mit verantwortlich dafür, dass sich gegen Ende der bluesmäßig dürftigen siebziger Jahre zunehmend mehr Musikfreaks für Blues interessierten. Als 12-jähriger wurde er von seiner Mutter in die schwarzen Bluesclubs von Los Angeles gefahren, wo Jimmy Witherspoon und andere ihn liebend gerne auf die Bühne holten. Schon bald darauf tourte er durch die USA in den Bands von John Lee Hooker, Albert King und Muddy Waters. Er war noch keine 20 Jahre alt und galt bereits als das größte Gitarrentalent seiner Ära. Schon bald hatte er das Touren über und gründete mit Al Blake, einem Harpspieler und Sänger aus Oklahoma, die Hollywood Fats Band. Mit von der Partie: der Lloyd Glenn Schüler Fred Kaplan und die nach wie vor ungeschlagene Top-Rhtyhmsection mit Taylor und Innes. In einem Studio, in dem schon in den 50ern große R&B-Hits produziert wurden, nahm die Band 1979 das einzige Album unter eigenem Namen auf. Neben dem homogonen Sound der Band sticht vor allem Fats' unglaublich satte und heftig verhallte Gitarre hervor. Spielend wechselt er von Rhythmusfiguren zu kleinen Licks und imposanten Soli. Es ist der kräftige Ton, um den ihn Gitarrenkollegen beneiden. Stevie Ray Vaughan hatte das Glück, die Band live zu sehen. Ihm sei die Kinnlade runter gefallen, hat er später erzählt. Ronnie Earl ist ein großer Fan von Hollywood Fats, und viele viele andere. Für mich ist er einer der Größten überhaupt. Mit Stolz können wir nun die definitive Edition mit den 1979er Studioaufnahmen anbieten, das Originalalbum (CD 1) plus über eine Stunde ursprünglich unveröffentlichtes Material, alternative Fassungen und ein komplett unbekanntes Stück (CD 2). His name is pure magic for most blues fans of my generation. Born Michael Mann in 1954, he was part of the re-emerging interest in the blues in the late '70s. It was his expressive guitar tone, his way of playing that attracted blues fans on both sides of the Atlantic ocean. Michael was only 12-years-old when his mother had to drive him to the blues clubs in Watts, the black ghetto in Los Angeles. There the young boy was sitting in with Jimmy Witherspoon and other blues legends. Soon he was touring with the bands of J.B. Hutto, Albert King, and Muddy Waters. But he didn't like the life on the road and decided to move back to LA. Along with Al Blake, originally from Oklahoma, he founded the Hollywood Fats Band. Fred Kaplan, the Lloyd Glenn inspired piano player, joined, and along with one of the best rhythm sections in the world, Larry Taylor and Richard Innes, their band sound was tight from the first day on. But it was Fats' guitar tone and sound that really blew people's minds. His tone is very fat, his playing powerful and rhythmically, permanently changing between bass lines, fill-ins and solos. His sound is tube amplified, with a mighty reverb. It was this sound that made other guitar players jealous. Stevie Ray Vaughan, would was lucky enough to see the Hollywood Fats Band play 'live', later said that his jaw dropped. Blues guitar heroes of modern times like Ronnie Earl, Junior Watson or Kirk Fletcher are amongst Fats' biggest fans.
