Jimmy Dean, a country music legend, was best known for ‘Big Bad John’, a smash hit in 1961 about a workingman hero. He was also known as an entrepreneur with his own sausage brand.
Jimmy Dean was born in 1928. He grew up in Plainview, Texas in a musical household. His mother showed him the first chor
ds on the piano. His father, who later left the family, was a songwriter and singer. Dean taught himself to play the accordion and the harmonica. He started his entertainment career in the 1950s. Soon, Dean’s band landet its first national hit with “Bummin’ Around”. During the 1960s, he had his own tv show, “The Jimmy Dean Show”. Within less than two hours in 1961, he wrote “Big Bad John”, the song about a coal miner who saves his fellow workers when a mine roof collapses. “Big Bad John” won a Grammy.
