Annie Leibovitz war neunzehn Jahre jung und Studentin am San Francisco Art Institue, als sie für die 'Rolling Stones' zu arbeiten begann. Drei Jahre später, 1973, wurde sie die Hausphotographin des Magazins und prägte ein Jahrzehnt lang dessen Erscheinungsbild mit ihren atmosphärisch dichten, oft ungewöhnlich arrangierten Musikerportraits.
