One of Sun Records’ last living legends has passed away
on the night of August 18th, 2017. The world has lost one of its most charismatic rockers. Sonny had been entertaining audiences for more than 60 years around the globe with his unique brand of rockabilly music and with songs like ‘We Wanna Boogie,’ ‘Red Headed Woman,’ and ‘Sadie’s Back In Town.’ After Sonny Burgess & The Pacers were formed in Newport, Arkansas, in 1955, they started recording in 1956 for Sam Phillips‘ legendary Sun label in Memphis, Tennessee.
He was the first in rockabilly music to add a trumpeter to the band.
Later Bruce Springsteen wrote the song ‘Tiger Rose’ for him. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame of Europe in 1999, followed by the induction into the Rockabilly Hall Of Fame in Jackson, Tennessee, in 2002, together with his band, The Legendary Pacers. Sonny and his band were also the recipients of the 2016 Folklife Award. The state of Arkansas inducted Sonny Burgess into the Arkansas Entertainers Hall of Fame and the city of Hot Springs, Arkansas, honored him on their own Walk of Fame.
We at Bear Family Records have met Sonny Burgess as an outstanding man, a true musician and a human person!
Our deep condolences go to his family and his friends!
