‘Desperate Men’, das er zusammen mit Cochran
aufgenommen hat, stiess 1999 Johnny Cash von Platz 1
derGavinAmericanaCharts;dergrosseDurchbruchblieb
ihm trotzdem immerverwehrt.Seitüber30Jahren schreibt
er Songs und tourt durch Amerika, er ist einer der letzten
Grossen, die das Label ‘Outlaw’ verdienen; seine Songs
sind erlebte Geschichten aus einem ziemlich bewegten
Leben. Schonungslos melancholisch aber nie Mitleid
heischend, singt er mit alkoholgetränkter Stimme von
Einsamkeit, Frauen, Drogen und immer wieder Amerika.
Die Idee zu ‘The Berlin Tapes’ wurde im Sommer 07
geboren, als Rockin’H Records, Billy Don für einen Gig
nach Berlin einlud. Billy Don kam, ohne Band, imGepäck
nur seine Gitarre. Da stand er, ein einsamer Wolf im
Scheinwerferlicht und sang seine Geschichten; ein
Ausnahme-Künstler wie man ihn sonst nur in den ‘Low
Places’ der USA erleben kann. Die Direktheit und Intimität
dieses Soloauftrittes liess keine Fragen offen. In einer
einzigennächstlichenSessionwurden‘TheBerlinTapes’ in
Berlin aufgenommen. Bei der gesamten CD-Produktion
wurde darauf geachtet, den intimen Charme dieser
Aufnahmen zu bewähren. ‘The Berlin Tapes’, sind
ehrliche,raueundunterdieHautgehendeCoutrysongs.
