Tex’s teasing
I Gotcha
rocketed
to the top of the R&B charts and
an impressive #2 pop in early
1972 on Dial, going gold in the
process.
“I went to Memphis and
did that,”
said Killen.
“I brought it
back to Nashville and I went in
and worked on it a little bit. It had
a big long intro, and I edited some
of that intro off. We put it out on
the back of ‘A Mother’s Prayer.’
Somebody started playing ‘I
Gotcha,’ and it sold over three
million copies.”
A fleet-footed onstage presence whose mic stand trick never failed to
delight a crowd, Tex managed to thrive during the disco era, scoring a
gold record in ’77 with
Ain’t Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman)
for Epic with Killen still at the helm. But a heart attack killed the 49-year-
old Tex on August 13, 1982 at his Texas home.

Stax STA-0119

distribution agreement between

the Atlantic empire in New York left
