The best-selling poet of the late ’60s, Rod McKuen was also a prolific singer-
songwriter, and orchestral composer and arranger. He was an early champion of Belgian
songwriter Jacques Brel, adapting his lyrics for an English-speaking audience. While
often dismissed by literary critics, McKuen’s work had a broad populist appeal. His
books of romantic poetry reportedly sold more than 65 million copies.
