Kill For Peace

Fugs

From their choice for the band's name to their pro-drug and anti-war lyrics, The Fugs were always controversial. Formed in New York City in the early '60s by Ed Sanders, Tuli Kupferberg and Ken Weaver, they chose a Norman Mailer euphemism for 'fuck' to set themselves apart from mainstream musicians.

Kill For Peace, a cut from the band's first, eponymous album, was also released as a single and is the best-known of their satirical war songs. Exorcising The Evil Spirits From The Pentagon Oct. 21, 1967, from the 1968 studio album 'Tenderness Junction,' is the actual recording of that anti-war demonstration. Norman Mailer's novel 'Armies Of The Night' is based on the protest march during which the Fugs and thousands of other demonstrators attempted to encircle and levitate the Pentagon. Another 'Tenderness Junction' track was War Song.

As of 2009, the Fugs can be heard on a 4-CD boxed set of their early recordings, and 'The Fugs Greatest Hits – 1984-2004.' They are also completing disc two of what will be called 'The Fugs Final CD.' While founding member Tuli Kupferberg has been slowed by a series of strokes, Ed Sanders' recently released CD called 'Thirsting For Peace' confirms that he hasn't lost his anti-war commitment.
