Autry Inman

Dream Boat

Born in Florence, Alabama on January 6, 1929, Robert Autry Inman was in and out of the charts for many years as a performer and songwriter. He had his own show on WLAY, Muscle Shoals when he was only 14, and signed on as a fiddle player with Cowboy Copas in 1947. By 1949, he was in George Morgan's band, and began his long recording career on Bullet that year (see our 'Shot In The Dark' box BCD 15854 for all the details). While still with Morgan, Inman wrote Mr. Moon, a hit for Carl Smith in 1951.

Later, the Louvins recorded his song I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby and Johnny Cash did Second Honeymoon. He signed with RCA in 1958, and Dreamboat shows him adapting well to the changing times. The next time Inman dented the charts, though, was with The Volunteer on Sims Records in 1963. He scored again with Ballad Of Two Brothers on Epic in 1968.

In between, he made some risqué albums for Jubilee, 'Riscotheque Saturday Night' and 'Riscotheque Adult Comedy Vol.2'. His early background as a court reporter then came in useful when he was arrested on several counts of bootlegging records, and after some jail time, he returned to the Nashville area. He was in Hendersonville when he died on September 6, 1988 (although, in the interests of accuracy, it's worth noting that the Social Security Dept. logged his death date as September 15 that year).
