Gilda Goes Atomic
The Operation Crossroads staff nicknamed the first post-war atomic test bomb
‘Gilda’ after Rita Hayworth’s hit film. And, for good measure, they pasted an Esquire magazine pin-up of the
movie star to the bombshell. On July 1, 1946 ‘Gilda’ exploded over Bikini Atoll and into history.
