emergency, all regular broadcasting would go silent and participating stations would alternate
broadcasting on just two frequencies: 640 and 1240 Kilocycles. The theory was that any Russian
bomber attempting to use fixed broadcasting frequencies to navigate his plane would be confused
by the alternating signals. This theory apparently discounted the possibility that Russian pilots
might have actually packed maps. Today the vestiges of CONELRAD can be still be seen on old
car radio dials. For many years the 640 and 1240 settings were pre-marked with two small triangles.
