Born in Cantwell, Missouri, Ferlin
Husky headed for the Golden State in
1948. Originally billed as Tex Terry, he
hooked up with Big Jim DeNoone, who
suggested he use the name Terry
Preston. Through DeNoone, Husky
recorded for the 4-Star label before joining the cast of Cliffie Stone’s ‘Hometown Jamboree’
TV show in Los Angeles. Stone helped Ferlin secure a recording contract with Capitol
Records.
“When I was in Los Angeles

Husky explained,
“Bill Woods came down for
something, and he was telling me about Bakersfield and the Rainbow Gardens

At Woods’
invitation, Husky relocated to Bakersfield where he worked as a radio DJ on KBIS, and led
the house band at the Rainbow Gardens Dance Hall on Saturday nights. Ferlin was the
first Bakersfield artist to record for Capitol, followed by Cousin Herb Henson, Tommy
