Sad news from Nashville… Little Jimmy Dickens died

Words by Tracy Pitcox (A Little Jimmy Dickens Fan)
„Little Jimmy Dickens passed away January 2, 2015 at the age of 94.

Jimmy worked a lot of shows with us throughout the last several years.  He would come to Texas and spend a weekend each year even after he „officially quit touring“ and it was some of my favorite times.  I would take the entire weekend off just so I could spend it all with him.  Picking him up and enjoying pizza and a little wine for dinner (even though I didn’t like wine, but how do you turn down Jimmy), doing the radio show, visiting with fans at the Heart of Texas Country Music Museum and then seeing him getting standing ovation after standing ovation during his shows for us.
As many know, in the music business we deal primarily in cash.  Artists have gotten the raw end of many promoters and club owners throughout the years.
The first time Jimmy worked with us, I picked he and his road manager Robbie Wittkowski up at the Austin airport.  As soon as Jimmy got in the front seat of my pickup, I handed him an envelope with $5,000 cash in it for his performances.  He put it in his jacket.  We stopped at a convenience store near Spicewood heading towards Brady.  After dinner and visiting, we retired for the night.  About eleven that night, Robbie called me and said that Jimmy could not find his envelope and he thought that it must have fallen out when we were at the convenience store.  My heart sank.  Robbie told me that Jimmy said to „tell Tracy not to worry because it was my fault and I am doing the shows for him and to not be concerned.“
Of course, I was very concerned and immediately went to my pickup.  I search all over and as I was about to close the door, looked at the inside pocket.  Laying there was a white Heart of Texas Records envelope that I had given to him earlier that day.  All of the money was still inside of course and I was delighted.  I took it straight to Jimmy and Robbie and they were both thrilled.  Jimmy told me that I could have easily kept the money and he would have never known.  He said, „From now on, any time that I work for you I would appreciate it if you would just give me one of your personal checks.“  I did from then on.  Every time.
He was such a gracious host anytime that I was in Nashville and always made you feel like you were important and somebody.
I saw him last on September 6, and will never forget that visit.  We laughed and visited and I thanked him for coming to Texas all of those times and he told me that he was ready to come back.  I know that he was.  Jimmy Dickens may have been little in size, but his talent was enormous.
You Won’t Be Forgotten, Tater.“
