Verärgerte Buddy Guy sein Publikum gerne durch launisches Verhalten und mittendrin abgebrochene Soli, so begeisterte Luther Allison seine Fans durch leidenschaftliche, schier unendliche und intensive Auftritte.
Mit seiner Ausstrahlung, seiner Warmherzigkeit, seiner nahezu wahnsinnigen Energie verwandelte er Bühne und Zuschauerraum in einen Tempel, dem Blues, den Emotionen und der verbindenden Kraft einer Live-Performance gewidmet. Sein Tod am 12. August 1997 war ein Schock. Für seine Familie, seine Freunde und die Mitglieder seiner riesigen Fangemeinde. I highly recommend watching Luther‘s performance during the 1996 W.C. Handy Awards. In it, the energy and love of a typical three-hour Luther Allison show compresses into a 15-minute relentless blues showcase that will leave you feeling astonished and gratified. This particular performance was the climax of his incredible career. Luther stole the show by performing and then by taking home five awards (including Blues Entertainer of the Year). Luther Allison is a genuine blues hero with an incomparable expanse of energy and love for his music and for the people who loved it. Since the 1980s, basically two African-American blues guitar players have essentially developed the music of their fathers and grandfathers, shaping and dominating the international blues scene: Buddy Guy and Luther Allison. While Buddy Guy liked to annoy his audience with moody behaviour and the abort of guitar solos, Luther Allison enthused his fans with passionate, infinite and intensive performances.
With his charisma, warm-heartedness, and almost insane energy, he transformed the stage and auditorium into a temple dedicated to the blues, the emotions and the connecting force of a live performance. His death on August 12, 1997 was a shock for his family, his friends and the members of his huge fan base. We all have lost a great musician, a tireless fighter and an ambassador for soulful blues music.
With this great release, which is also available as a limited edition CD box, Thomas Ruf has produced a worthy memorial to the artist who once inspired him to found Ruf Records.
