published the album 'Freedom Sings,' containing
three shellac records with six songs from the Paris pro-
duction 'La voz de España.' It lists the performers as
"The Spanish Republican Army Chorus and Orchestra."
Muriel Rukeyser wrote in the liner notes:
”The vivid passionate songs of Republican Spain are
moving, even out of their time and their setting. And
now, with the conflict against fascism still unwon in
Spain, the songs reach us in all their urgency. The fierce
lovely music of these songs come from soldiers and fish-
ermen, poets and the people who met at the café in the
evening to talk politics – that is, to talk about all things
– and from the rich past of the fight for freedom in Spain.
Some of the six songs in this album were improvised
by the soldiers of the Loyalist Army, singing stanza after
stanza as they waited or marched. Some of the tunes are
the ballads and traditional folksongs that always crop up
in wartime, with a word or two changed to fit the mean-
ing into the fighting moment. These songs were sung in
Spain during the open fighting against fascism and
Franco, and in France – where these recordings were
made in 1938 and where Republican Spaniards later
fought along with the Maquis.”

edom Sings'. Contenía tres discos de acetato con seis cancio-
nes provenientes de la producción 'La voz de España', que se
había publicado anteriormente en París. En la tapa se nom-
braba a los intérpretes como "El coro y la orquesta del Ejér-
cito Republicano de España". Muriel Rukeyser escribió en las
notas que acompañaban este álbum:
"Incluso fuera de su época y de su contexto, las canciones
vivas y apasionadas de la España Republicana nos siguen con-
moviendo de igual manera hoy en día. Además, estas canciones
llegan hasta nosotros con toda su urgencia, ya que el fascismo en
España aún no está vencido. La música bella y feroz de estas can-
ciones proviene de soldados y pescadores, de poetas y del pueblo
que se reunía por la tarde en algún café para hablar de política –
es decir, para hablar de todo – así como de la rica tradición de
todas aquellas luchas por la libertad que habían tenido lugar en
suelo español.
Algunas de las seis canciones en este álbum fueron improvi-
sadas por los soldados del Ejercito Republicano mientras espera-
ban o marchaban, cantando una estrofa detrás de otra. Algunas
de las melodías son baladas o cantos populares tradicionales que
resurgen una y otra vez en tiempos de guerra, cambiando una que
otra palabra para ajustarlas a la situación de la lucha actual. Las
canciones en este álbum fueron entonadas en España durante la
lucha abierta contra los fascismos y contra Franco, así como en
Francia, donde se hicieron estas grabaciones en 1938 y donde los
españoles republicanos continuaron luchando luego contra el fas-
cismo invasor, lado a lado con los Maquis de la Resistencia.
