We close with yet another Boston group, this one from Peabody, just north of Boston. The original group comprised Bobby Mansfield who took the lead vocals and played piano; Robert Wentworth who played guitar; Lee DeFelice on drums; and Donald Emilian on saxophone. Their first gig was at a church hall, and they were together two or three years.
Early on, they met a local music publisher, Sam Lembo of Salem Music, who hooked them up with ABC-Paramount. The Dusters recorded their lone ABC single at the Ace Studio in Boston. Mansfield reckons that Lembo hired a bass player for the date, but doesn't remember his name. The Dusters never got far from Boston. They backed Frankie Avalon, the Big Bopper, and Bill Haley, and were supposed to go to Philadelphia to appear on 'Bandstand,' but the deal failed to materialize.
ABC cut them loose after Pretty Girl failed to chart, although Bobby Mansfield remembers it charting in Australia, and it probably did well in and around Boston. They recorded one other single, She's Mine, for Sam Lembo's Cupid Records, and Lembo took Mansfield to audition for Chancellor Records. Otherwise, the story ends here. Bobby Mansfield attended music school and now plays jazz as a sideline to his tile design company. Donald Emilian hung around the Boston jazz scene for a few years, playing alto sax.
