Tal Henry

Bandleader Tal Henry led the North Carolinians, a 'sweet' dance band that played mostly southern locales during the late 1920s and early '30s. The group recorded 11 titles for Victor in 1928, including a cover of Rodgers' My Little Old Home Down In New Orleans, recorded on December 5, 1928, just six months after Rodgers' version. Like the Shilkret numbers, Henry's version is instrumental only, but it is not as well-crafted as Shilkret's recordings. Still, the existence of this recording of a Rodgers song by a relatively obscure territory band hints at the pervasiveness Rodgers' songs were already achieving, even toward the beginning of his recording career. Even more telling is the fact that Victor chose to issue this obviously uptown disc in their 'old familiar tunes' series (V-40000), which was aimed at rural audiences.
