Los Xochimilcas

It is necessary to emphasize the contribution made by this outstanding quartet, the work of a group that was ahead of its time. They were one of the first to fuse rock and roll with other popular genres, pioneers in the inclusion of trumpet and other non-rock instruments. They anticipated the use of clothing extravaganza onstage and combed their long hair down, paired with their mordant criticism of society in an atmosphere of parody and exoticism.

This transcendental musical quartet did not arise in the U.S.A. or Europe. It was Mexican, and its name was Los Xochimilcas! It’s a shame that although Los Xochimilcas is one of Mexico’s most seminal quartets, not much is known about them. It’s been said that they had their origin in the 1940s, and that they of Francisco ‘Paco’ Gómez García, nick-named ‘El Glostora,’ on bass and vocal, Francisco Martín Armenta Tornero on trumpet and lead vocal, César Sosa (‘El Patiño’) on accordion and vocal, and Antonio Caudillo on drums and vocal. This most unique combination of instruments, along with the band’s skills and ingenuity, made it possible for the group to perform the most diverse genres in an uncontrollable rhythmic melting pot that fusioned traditional Mexican music with rock and roll and jazz.
