Doug Stanford
From Poplarville, Mississippi, Doug Stanford was one of several Louisiana-Mississippi Gulf Coast acts that came to 'D' via self-styled promoter Fred Henley, who was living in Picayune, Mississippi at the time (several of the artists he placed with 'D' worked at WRJW in Picayune). Stanford was one of the more interesting of these Henley-connected singers, as his tough two sider Won't You Tell Me b/w Sady, both included here, amply proves.
Not much older than the Winter brothers -- he turned 18 around the time he cut this single --Stanford cut these two semi-late, self-penned rockabilly numbers at WRJW with another teenager, Billy Fred Stockstill, providing hot guitar accompaniment. Stanford, who like so many local and regional artists, played music as a weekend sideline to full-time 'real' employment, also cut sides for Louisiana labels Karma and Bofuz.
