Neil Armstrong – One Small Step
While training for the lunar expedition, Neil Armstrong barely escaped death in the crash of a lunar landing training vehicle on May 6, 1968. During the moon landing with his colleague Buzz Aldrin on July 20, 1969, he took over the manual control of the lunar landing vehicle Eagle and steered it away from rocky terrain to a safe landing at 20:17 (UTC). His first words from the moon to the ground station were "Out of DETENT". Shortly thereafter he intoned the famous words "Houston, Tranquility Base here.
The Eagle has landed," officially announcing the landing. Six hours later he climbed out of the lunar module in the early morning hours of July 21. Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the lunar surface at 02:56:20 (UTC) on 21 July 1969. One of the most famous slips of the tongue in history was also born: Armstrong had resolved to say the words ''That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind'', but due to the exertion and excitement he missed the pronunciation of a single A-vowel and thus gave the sentence an unwanted meaning: ''That's one small step for man...one giant leap for mankind.''
Armstrong first admitted his slip of the tongue during an interview for the book 'Chariots for Apollo' (1986) after many years of various reports, evidence and alleged counterevidence. The immense scientific and cultural significance of the first moon landing, however, eclipsed his slip of the tongue, and although he did not accurately reproduce his intended lines, they are among the world's most famous words ever spoken by a human being. Armstrong was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969 for his achievement.
