Butler, George "Wild Child"
(born October 1, 1936, Autaugaville, Ala.) A journeyman harmonica player and singer, George "Wild Child" Butler be-gan his blues career in his native Alabama in the late 1950s. As a child he had not only taught himself how to play the harmonica, but had also built his own instrument from a discarded Prince Albert tobacco can.
Butler cut his first record, Achin' All Over," for the tiny Sharp label in 1963. However, it wasn't until his move to Chicago in 1966 and his signing of a recording contract that year with Jewel Records that he began to attract some attention in the blues commu-nity. While with Jewel, Butler recorded a number of sides, some of which con-tained backing from bass player WILLIE DIXON and guitarist JIMMY DAWKINS. During this time Butler also worked with LIGHTNIN' HOPKINS in Houston, ap-pearing on some of Hopkins's late '60s recordings.
Butler left Jewel in 1968 and a year later signed with Mercury Records, for which he cut Keep on Doing What You're Doing, an album that received little notice. A subsequent album for Roots Records, Funky Butt Lover, recorded in 1976, was later reworked and rereleased as Lickin' Gravy for Rooster Blues in 1990. Butler often toured with guitarist JIMMY ROGERS in the 1980s, shelving his solo career. But after Butler moved to Windsor, Canada, in 1985, he began per-forming with his own band. In 1991 he resumed his recording career with the release of Mean Old Blues on the Bullseye Blues label. Butler continues to record and perform.
