The Empala Six
Although The Empala Six were a fantastic instrumental combo and successful in sales with two 45s on Blue Moon in 1959/1960, there’s no information available about this band. Both 45s received positive reviews in ‘Billboard’ magazine in their July 27, 1959 and March 14, 1960 issues. The Empala Six was a six-piece instrumental combo consisting of lead and rhythm guitar, bass guitar, drums, piano and a tenor saxophone, and their sound was somewhere between early surf instros and the tittyshaker sound á la The Upsetters. We strongly believe that The Empala Six hailed from San Francisco’s Bay Area, although it’s not yet proven.
