In the late 1950s, Jolly Jody and the Go Daddies was the most popular rock band in Bakersfield. Bassist Jolly Jody Keplinger and vocalist Al Hendrix had joined forces in 1956, and, when Hendrix recorded a solo effort for Tally, he naturally used the musicians he knew and trusted. Credited to 'Al Hendrix with Jolly Jody and His Go Daddies' and released in January of 1958, Rhonda Lee is an onslaught of insistent saxophone competing with the vocalist for attention. Hendrix, a strong-voiced rocker, holds his own.

Realizing it was difficult to go up against established labels, Tally leased the recording to ABC Paramount, which issued it in February. Unlike Wally Lewis' recording of Kathleen, Rhonda Lee didn't make any national sales charts. Hendrix went on to sign with LaGree Records in Hollywood, which leased his I Need You and Young And Wild to Liberty Records. Hendrix later signed with Bakersfield's Pike label, for which he recorded the cult-classic Monkey Bite.
