Lummie Lewis & His Merrymakers
Dallas policeman Columbus 'Lummie' Lewis (1910-1978) had only one recording session for Vocalion, in June 1937. Travelin' Blues was written by Shelly Lee Alley, who sang three other songs at the Merrymakers' session and also played violin on Rodgers' original 1931 recording. Lewis' session led to a contract for Alley of his own for Vocalion later that year. The Merrymakers' version of Travelin' Bluesis almost identical to one made by Leon Chappelear's Lone Star Cowboys, which came out earlier in 1937 on Decca. In addition to Lewis and Chappelear's voices being quite similar, both of their bands also featured a fiddle and clarinet lead.
