Joe Medwick
Joe Medwick Masters was born on June 22, 1933 and while in his teens was singing gospel with the Chosen Gospel Singers. In the '50s he was already singing blues in Houston's Third Ward bars, at the same time writing and selling songs for Houston label owner, songwriter, producer Don Robey. Robey steered songs to artists on his Duke label such as Bobby Bland. One biographer wrote, "it seems certain [Medwick] penned Further On Up The Road [#1], I Pity The Fool [#1], Cry Cry Cry [#9] and Call On Me [#6] for Bland."
Medwick cut several records of his own for Duke, none of which created much interest. On You Still Send Me he tried unsuccessfully to take advantage of Sam Cooke's huge cross-over hit of 1957/58 when You Send Me topped both the Pop and R&B Charts. After he left Duke, Medwick recorded on Paradise, Allboy, East-West, Boogaloo and Pacemaker. In '65 he appeared on Monument for one release and a year later he recorded Robert Parker's Barefootin'.
The 1963 Letter To A Buddie is a night club monologue about a soldier's wife who is living the good life while her husband is overseas. The line, "You know I sure do envy you over there in Viet Nam, right in the thick of things," was intended to be humorous. Johnny Bond changed the song's jazz-like background to a more country-like sound and its title to A Letter From Home, but otherwise his 1965 version on the album 'The Man Who Comes Around' holds true to the original.
A handful of releases on Teardrop, Westpark, VE GEO and Kimberly make up the remainder of Medwick's singles output. He recorded two albums, the 1966 'Barefootin'' and the 1988 'Slow Down Young Lovers'. He can also be heard on the 1988 album 'Full Gain' by Grady Gaines & The Texas Upsetters. Medwick died of liver cancer on April 12, 1992.
