John Sellers
Born in Clarksdale, Mississippi, John Sellers (1924-1999) grew up in a sporting house that catered to traveling shows. This led to him becoming an adept singer and dancer, performing in local minstrel show talent contests in the early 1930s. Later, he toured with gospel great Mahalia Jackson before graduating to theater and club work in the 1940s. As a gospel performer, he billed himself as Brother John Sellers. Sellers' 1947 recording for RCA Victor of Rodgers' bawdy Let Me Be Your Sidetrack was anything but sacred, and featured an early appearance by future Chess Records producer/songwriter Willie Dixon on bass.
