Buddy Williams
Born Harry Taylor, Buddy Williams (1918-1986) was an orphan who began performing country music at the age of 16, performing as a busker while working at a quarry. In 1939 he started his recording career, which would last over 40 years, resulting in Williams becoming one of Australia's favorite singers of cowboy songs. Like his contemporary, Tex Morton, Williams idolized American yodelers Goebel Reeves and Jimmie Rodgers. Although somewhat more restrained as a performer than the ebullient Morton, Williams carved out his own niche in the Australian country music scene. Through most of his career, Williams performed without a band, preferring to accompany himself on guitar. Dear Old Sunny South By The Sea comes from a 1962 session in Sydney.
