Von Dave Godin und den frühen Liebhabern der Soulmusik verehrt, war die große Maxine Brown eine der am meisten unterschätzten R&B-Königinnen der sechziger Jahre. Während dieser Zeit veröffentlichte sie eine Reihe von Singles - -All in My Mind," "Funny." "Something You Got", und die atemberaubende Ballade "Oh No. Not My Baby" - die es schaffte, entweder Pop- oder R&B-Hits zu werden.
Sie versäumte es, ihren rechtmäßigen Platz im R&B-Pantheon zu gewinnen, vielleicht wegen ihrer guten Zeit. New York City Pop-Seele fehlte es an südlicher Frechheit oder Tragödie. Trotz ihres Fehlens von Schlägen. Brown gilt als eine der besten Rhythm & Blues-Sängerinnen ihrer Zeit. Sie war in der Lage, Soul, Jazz, Pop und Pop mit gleicher Souveränität zu liefern.
Maxine Brown (geboren in Kingstree. South Carolina am 18. August 1939) wurde nicht nur von den großen Gospel- und R&B-Künstlern der Vergangenheit beeinflusst, sie arbeitete auch mit einigen der besten Talente der goldenen Ära der Seele zusammen, darunter dem großen Otis Redding, dem unnachahmlichen Chuck Jackson. und dem phänomenalen Ed Townsend. Ihre mangelnde Offenheit behinderte ihr echtes Gesangstalent. Wie auch immer. Browns herzzerreißende Balladen. großartige Uptempo-Tanznummern und alles dazwischen. werden dafür sorgen, dass ihr Vermächtnis noch lange Zeit frisch in den Köpfen der Menschen bleibt.
Diese spezielle LP-Veröffentlichung enthält 18 Studio-Tracks, darunter eine Reihe der sensationellen Singles, die Maxine Brown für den kleinen Nomar produziert hat. Wand und die großen ABC-Paramount Labels. zwischen 1960 und 1962. Die meisten dieser großartigen Lieder würden Teil von Maxines Debüt-LP sein. Die legendäre The Fabulous Sound of Maxine Brown. erschien im Wand Imprint. Höhepunkte sind Browns erste Single "All in My Mind" und der Nachfolger "Funny" sowie andere berührende Balladen wie "Think of Me", "Ask Me" und die bereits erwähnte "Oh No. Not My Baby". Letzteres wurde ursprünglich für The Shirelles geschrieben, wurde aber mit alternativen Lead-Stimmen aufgenommen. Der Arrangeur Stan Greenberg stellte fest, dass der Song einen anderen melodischen Ansatz erforderte, weshalb er Maxine angeboten wurde, mit dem Vorbehalt, dass sie die Melodie entwickelt.
Weitere Highlights sind die peppige Pop-Nummer "Wanting You" und das brüllende "I Got a Funny Kind of Feeling". "My Time for Cryin'" (eine ausgezeichnete Orgel- und Chorbegleitete langsame Melodie). und der hervorragende Clyde Otis-Brook Benton Country-schräg "If You Have No Real Objections". Dieses Set enthält auch eine Reihe von Maxine Browns weniger bekannten Songs, wie z.B. "Since I Found You". -Himmel in deinen Armen" und "Wenn ich damals wüsste (was ich jetzt weiß)", die ebenfalls Aufmerksamkeit verdienen.
Alle diese fabelhaften Aufnahmen wurden in dieser Collector's Edition neu gemastert und verpackt. Dies beweist deutlich die Vielseitigkeit von Maxine Brown sowie ihren rechtmäßigen Platz im R&B und Early Soul Pantheon.

Born August 18, 1939 in Kingstree, South Carolina, Maxine Brown grew up in the New York borough of Queens, singing gospel before going secular with a group called The Manhattans. "The leader of the group said, 'You never donate anything to the group. Here, here's a title. Go write something!'" she says. "I was sitting there steaming. How dare he just throw this title at me? So I'm thinking about all my past experiences in the short span that I was out there, and all of a sudden this melody came to me, and the words just started coming, and in about ten minutes I was through!" Nothing more came of All In My Mind until two years later, when agent Mal Williams asked Maxine if she had any originals. "He said, 'Well, this is better than the stuff we're going in the studio with!' And we went in and recorded that.
"So one day we're standing in front of the Brill Building, and Tony Bruno walked out and said, 'Hey Mal, what have you got?' He said, 'I've got this demo and her!' So he said, 'Well, bring it up and let me hear it!' So the next day he took it up and let him hear it, and he flipped!" Out on Bruno's tiny Nomar label, All In My Mind peaked at #2 R&B in 1961. A few months later, her Funny made it to #3. "I needed a guitar player to conduct for me. And I got this young man by the name of Sammy Taylor," she says. "He was getting ready to record for himself. And when he played that song for me, I said, 'I've got to have it! That's my next hit!'"
Nomar wasn't long for the world, and Williams—by then her hubby—put his gorgeous spouse on ABC-Paramount. "One day I ran into Florence Greenberg in a restaurant at the corner of where 1650 Broadway is," says Maxine. "She says, 'When are you gonna leave that label and come over to my label and let me do something for you?'
I said, 'If you want me, go get me!' And the very next day she did."
Gerry Goffin and Carole King wrote Oh No Not My Baby, Maxine's entrancing #24 pop seller for Greenberg's Wand logo. "Stan Green (Florence's sightless son) was the one who found 'Oh No Not My Baby' for me out of the vault," she says. "Because originally, that track was done by The Shirelles," she says. "I took the record home.
I didn't pay too much attention. And I put it on a boom box and put it in my window and I sat on the porch. And these two girls were skipping rope, and as the record played, they kept saying, 'Oh no, not my baby.' I said, 'Uh-oh! When people start singing the hook, you've got something!' So I went back in the house, and I went to work." Dee Dee Warwick and The Sweet Inspirations provided vocal harmonies. The song was successfully covered in 1965 by Manfred Mann in the U.K., and hit again in '73 for Rod Stewart. Maxine continued to score '60s hits for Wand, both on her own and as Chuck Jackson's duet partner, and still performs in New York.
