Byron Johnson

Picayune, Mississippi deejay Byron (or B.J.) Johnson was another of the Gulf Coast acts who came to 'D' via Fred Henley, who is co-credited here with Ray Doggett as composer. Johnson was essentially a honky-tonker, but True Affection finds him leaning ever-so-slightly toward rock 'n' roll, with Billy Fred Stockstill again featured on guitar on a tune cut in the WRJW studios, where Johnson worked. He also cut sides for Pee Wee Maddux's Biloxi-based Fine Records and for Big Howdy, as well as a fantastic honky-tonker with Vern Pullens issued originally on Jones & Hess' Spade label that was later issued by 'D' (see 'The Complete 'D' Singles, Volume 2') Johnson, who was born in Kiln, Mississippi in 1928, reportedly died in 1997.
