Tommy Wood

The first 'D' release was this unlikely, pseudonymous quasi-rocker from the fantastic Houston-native singer-songwriter Eddie Noack, who spoke at length about the recording to Bill Millar in the mid-70s. Daily and Noack were close, and one of the first things Daily made sure of when he knew he was starting 'D' was to make sure Noack got free of his Starday contract so that he could sign with Daily.

That accomplished, the next hurdle was the poor sales in 1957-58 for Noack's brand of pure and uncommonly intelligent Texas honky-tonk. "It was 'Pappy's' idea to have me sing rock 'n' roll on the first 'D' record. He said, 'Country music's really bad.' You know, I'd gotten my first [Pick of the Week] on a song of my own called 'Dust On The River' on Starday...and I think it maybe sold 185 copies -- so Pappy said 'We're gonna have to try something else.' 'Well,' I said, 'that's fine by me, but you're not gonna use my name.' The record came out under the pseudonym of Tommy Wood. It's just that I'm a country singer and I know I can't do rock 'n' roll. I knew what was put out wouldn't sell and it didn't.

So we went back to country and the next one we cut, 'Have Blues Will Travel' was the biggest hit I ever had." Noack was somewhat puzzled by his status among rockabilly fans. "I'm not hostile to rock 'n' roll," he told Millar. "Y'see, I first heard Presley the summer before I was drafted into the Army in 1954 and I really liked it....[but] I wouldn't personally describe any of my records as rockabilly, although I know they have over here [in the UK]...but no, I'm pure country." Noack, who drank himself to death at 47 in Nashville in 1978, is probably best known for Have Blues Will Travel and for writing classics like These Hands, but he left behind a considerable and too-little-heralded legacy of fine recordings and classic country compositions.
