Nur wenige Komponisten konnten so unterschiedliche Künstler wie B.B. King , Steppenwolf, Elvis Presley, Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, John Denver, Waylon Jennings, The Crusaders, The Kingston Trio und Ringo Starr auflisten, die ihre Songs gecovert haben. Hoyt Axtons bekanntester Song Joy To The World, ein Nr. 1 Hit für die amerikanische Vokalband Three Dog Night 1971, beginnt mit der Zeile ''Jeremiah was a bullfrog, was a good friend of mine''.
Nach vielen Alben mit den Labels Vee-Jay, Capitol, A&M und MCA in den 60er und 70er Jahren, gründete Axton 1979 sein eigenes Label und nannte es Jeremiah Records. Diese 5-CD-Klappbox enthält alle fünf Alben von Jeremiah Records in Faksimile-Stecktaschen und ein 32-seitiges Booklet mit den Texten, Musikern, Bildern und Anmerkungen. Das erste Album -Rusty Old Halo- enthält Della And The Dealer, einen Hit in den USA und Großbritannien, sowie drei weitere US-Country-Hits. Das Nachfolgealbum -Where Did The Money Go?- (1980) mit weiteren Hits, während das 1981er Album -Live- auch Songs enthält, die von anderen bekannt wurden, wie No No No Song, Lion In The Winter, Never Been To Spain und Joy To The World.
Veröffentlicht 1982 und 1990, -Pistol Packin' Mama- und -Spin Of The Wheel- kamen zum Ende von Axtons TV- und Filmkarriere in den 80ern, herausragend vor allem in 'Gremlins'. Zu Axtons musikalischen Gästen gehören Dr. John, Stephen Stills, James Burton, Glenn D. Hardin, Jeff Baxter, Garth Hudson, Paul Butterfield, Bill Kirchen und Byron Berline.

Sweet Misery
A&M's publishing subsidiary, Rondor, had a deal with Hoyt Axton's Lady Jane Music, and probably prevailed upon the label to issue an album of songs that might not sell but might attract some cover versions. Axton had done well when other artists covered his songs Greenback Dollar, Joy To The World, The Pusher, Never Been To Spain, and others. And so it proved to be again. Martha Reeves covered Sweet Misery on her epically expensive and unsuccessful solo album, but there was a consolation prize when John Denver recorded it on his 'Farewell Andromeda' LP. But the entire album was more than a disguised demo record; it was an understated delight. He seemed to have been listening to J.J. Cale, even to the point of using some of the musicians that Cale often used, and his soulful bullfrog baritone never sounded better.
