Jessie Clifton
When the American folk music revival reached its peak in 1963, Mercury Records launched a series of mid-priced albums under the Cumberland imprint. Mostly produced for Mercury by Starday Records, the label featured a few familiar names: pioneering Western swing fiddler Cecil Brower, Dobro and steel guitar veteran Shot Jackson, harmonica virtuoso Jimmy Riddle and country/gospel singer Dave Rich. But the bulk of the Cumberland catalog was generic, acoustic country, folk, bluegrass, western, and gospel music by anonymous Nashville session musicians and vocalists. Cumberland's 'The Jimmie Rodgers Story' was credited to Jessie Clifton, who made no other known recordings and could likely be a pseudonym for another vocalist. (Dave Samuelson)
