Im Jahr 1965 war der britische R&B Boom vorbei. Cyril Davies war tot, Alexis Korner arbeitete als MD bei einer Kinder TV-Show und die Legion der jungen Gefolgschaft, die die beiden inspiriert haben, sind entweder zum Blues abgedriftet oder der Versuchung des Ruhms im Mainstream Pop zum Opfer gefallen. Die Puristen und Individualisten standen allein im Regen.

Aber die Dinge sollten sich ändern. Im April 1966 nahm die Clubband John Mayall's Blues Breakers – mit einem leise vor sich hin brodelnden Clapton – ihr Studiodebüt unter Mithilfe von Produzent Mike Vernon auf. Auf einmal war eine ganze Reihe von virtuosen jungen britischen (und irischen) Blues Gitarristen, die allesamt der Falle Pop und Erfolg widerstanden haben, inspiriert, ihre eigene Band zu gründen.

In der Folge wurden so heutige Legenden wie Kim Simmonds, Jeremy Spencer, Stan Webb, Paul Kossoff, Alvin Lee, Clem Clempson, Rory Gallagher, Gary Moore und Mick Ronson berühmt. Innerhalb eines oder zwei Jahren nach Mayall's unerwartetem Durchbruch stand die zweite Welle des britischen Blues in voller Blüte.
