Sam Lazar Trio – Space Flight

The pianist/organist Sam Lazar from St. Louis, Missouri is a mysterious figure who disappeared from the music scene all of a sudden in 1964. There's little information about Sam Lazar; what there is comes mostly from the liner notes of his original albums. Lazar played jazz and swing piano in various groups and orchestras before he left in 1951 to join the US Army. He began studying medical technology after his discharge in 1953. 1958 saw him back on the scene, though playing Hammond organ rather than piano. He formed the Sam Lazar Trio who recorded for the Cawthron label in 1959 before they moved to Chess' subsidiary Argo. The original version of Space Flight, split into Part 1 and 2, was issued in late 1959 on Cawthron. The version we have chosen here was recorded at Chicago's Ter-Mar Recording Studios on June 1, 1960, with Sam Lazar (organ), Grant Green (guitar), Willie Dixon (bass), and Chauncey Williams (drums). The track appeared on Argo 5365 in July 1960, and later on Argo LP/LPS 4002, 'Space Flight,' in both mono and stereo.
