Texas Ruby
Ruby Owens (1909-1963) was the younger sister of Tex Owens, composer of Cattle Call, and a popular radio entertainer during the 1930s. Ruby married flamboyant fiddler Curly Fox in 1939, the two forming a popular act that appeared on the Grand Ole Opry and the Boone County Jamboree. In addition to having a rich alto voice, Owens was also a fine yodeler, becoming one of the few women before World War II to record a Jimmie Rodgers song. Rodgers' songs were definitely masculine; even his sentimental ballads sang from a male perspective. Blue Yodel No. 1 was one of only two recordings Owens made before the war; afterward, she and Fox recorded frequently for Columbia with their group, the Fox Hunters. Owens died in a trailer fire in 1963.
