(2002/Nortwest-Norton) 18 Tracks - 

We blow right into Volume Two with a round of killers from the wilds of Oregon. Much of the pre-rock n' roll local music scene centered around Oklahoma transplant Lloyd 'Pappy' Smith's spacious D Melody Ranch in Eugene. The Melody played host to many of the nation's top country and western stars and Pappy led the popular house dance band. He began featuring his son Leon, who first performed at age five standing on Coke crates to reach the mike, but what started out as a novelty soon blossomed into a full fledged bona fide attention grabber. Leon took over on lead guitar in the house band at age twelve and a year later he played on Shove Off Short Stuff by Buddy Kline on his dad's Orbit label. 

By 1956 Leon switched to rock n' roll, fronting the Orbit Rockers and in 1959 his first release Little Forty Ford kicked off Orbit's Willamette rock n' roll subsidiary. The record started to break in sever-al Northwest markets prompting Epic to pick it up for a national shot. Epic failed to push the record, but a determined Leon toured the Northwest into California and continued to cut cool rockers like Honey Honey and Flip Flop And Fly for Willamette before switching to Pat Mason's Lavender label. Medford, Oregon thrush Jackie Johnson was a mere fourteen years old when she cut the fiery Star Light Star Bright on Willamette, boasting a confident vocal that few gal rockabillies could hope to match. She was spotted singing with Bob Roberts and the Melody Wranglers and was soon touring with Jim Reeves, Ferlin Husky and Freddy Hart and working local shows with George Jones and Kitty Wells. 

The everpresent Leon Smith and his band provided solid backing whallop. Collectors have long talked up the 1957 disc I Ain't Gonna Take It No More by Eugene based piano pumper Mel Dorsey on Orbit, but the lesser known tough sax rocker Little Lil cut two years later on Black Jack is an infinitely cooler platter. Backing was by Chuck Wayne and his combo the Heartbeats. Wayne owned the label, issuing fine sides by the Cobra Bros. and Rose Maddox as well as another Dorsey disc Annie Miss Fanny. Wayne was also the proprietor of the Garden Of Allah, a famed northern California dance palace that played host to many top country acts as well as rockers like Gene Vincent. 

Dorsey held a long stint at the Garden and did session work under a variety of aliases, notably Lord Charles on Combo and Modern. Also on the vibrant late fifties Eugene, Oregon scene was the enigmatic Larry De Rieux. 'I knew Leon Smith since high school and I'd seen Leon's Western band at the Melody Ranch. We were fighting off country music, playing slow songs for loggers. As soon as rock n' roll came around, they kissed his ass goodbye.' In 1959 Larry cut the irresistible Chicken Session on Arco.
