Längst überfällige zweiteilige Dokumentation auf Bear Family, die einem der großartigsten Gospel-, Rhythm & Blues-, Soul- und Rock & Roll-Sänger gewidmet ist: Clyde McPhatter (1932 – 1972).
Auf ‘Clyde McPhatter Rocks‘ hat Produzent Nico Feuerbach die mitreißenden Up-Tempo-Nummern zusammengestellt, ‚The Ballads Of‘ widmet sich den großartigen Balladen des Tenorsängers.
Als einer der ersten fusionierte er den Harmoniegesang der Gospel Music mit den heißen Grooves des Rhythm ‘n‘ Blues und gilt als Pionier der Soul Music und hervorragender Rocker.
‚Rocks‘ fasst seine besten schnellen Aufnahmen aus seiner Zeit bei Billy Ward & The Dominoes, den Drifters und seiner Solokarriere zusammen.

Die Behauptung, Soul Music habe in jenem Moment begonnen, als Clyde McPhatter seinen Mund öffnete und loslegte, ist nicht übertrieben. Die neuartige Mischung aus Rhythm and Blues und Gospel des melismatischen Leadsängers (Tenor) von Billy Ward's Dominoes entstand sogar noch vor der von Ray Charles kreierten Melange und öffnete die Tür zu einem ganz neuen Musikgenre. Und wie Clyde rocken konnte!

Bear Familys neuer zweiteiliger Überblick über McPhatters einzigartigen Katalog folgt ihm von seinen frühen Tagen als Frontmann der Drifters bei Atlantic Records, als sie mit Money Honey und Honey Love große Hits in den R&B-Charts landeten, über seine Solowerke bei Atlantic (A Lover's Question war 1958 ein riesiger Verkaufserfolg) bis hin zu seinen großartigen Aufnahmen für M-G-M und Mercury (einschließlich seines 1962er Hits Lover Please). Unterstützt von erstklassigen Studiobands, zu denen auch die Saxophonvirtuosen Sam ‘The Man‘ Taylor, King Curtis und Boots Randolph (der bei Clydes Nashville-Version von Fats Dominos I'm Gonna Be A Wheel Someday einen wahren Sturm entfacht) zählten, war Clyde McPhatter ein Soul-Pionier und ein Rocker von Weltklasse, der für seine gewaltigen Leistungen weit mehr Anerkennung verdient hätte, als er bekommt.

Clyde McPhatter wurde 1932 geboren. Vom Leben enttäuscht, mittellos, alkoholanhängig und depressiv starb er mit nur 39 Jahren. Schon zu Lebzeiten eine Legende, blieb ihm der große kommerzielle Erfolg zu verwehrt. Er hinterließ ein gewaltiges musikalisches Vermächtnis mit Aufnahmen aus einem Zeitraum von 22 Jahren! Clyde McPhatter wurde als erster Musiker überhaupt zwei Mal in die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame aufgenommen, zunächst als Solokünstler, später auch als Sänger der Drifters.

Wonderful!

Well, these two new CDs are a complete joy. With a combined 63 tracks they represent both the uptempo and ballads that Clyde McPhatter excelled at. Covering his Atlantic, MGM and Mercury periods they serve as a much extended ‘Best of’ with lots of lesser-known numbers of equal quality.
The Atlantic recordings are in a class of their own – from his time with the Drifters and his solo career following his discharge from the US Army in mid ’55. Songs like ‘Money Honey’, ‘Treasure of Love’, ‘A Lover’s Question’ and ‘Whatcha Gonna Do’ are all classics of their time and sound wonderful to this day. My favourites ‘Let The Boogie Woogie Roll’ and ‘Deep Sea Ball’ that came out belatedly in 1960 fairly jump out of the speakers and show the depth of the recordings that Atlantic had in the can. Indeed, the when the Atlantic unissued tracks were released in late ’59 and 60 to compete with the new 45s generated from his move to MGM, they charted much higher.
It’s fair to say that Clyde’s tenure at MGM wasn’t particularly spectacular. Only ‘Twice as Nice’ and a couple of others make the Bear Family cut. Much more successful was his move to Mercury where Clyde got his second musical wind. Twinned with Clyde Otis and then the young producer Jerry Kennedy (prior to his success with both Roger Miller and Jerry Lee Lewis) he hit big with his cover of Thurston Harris’ ‘Little Bitty Pretty One’, Ta Ta’ and Billy Swan’s ‘Lover Please’. Mercury spared no expense and gave Clyde great backing and strong songs.
The booklets that accompany the CDs have liner notes by Bill Dahl and include the usual details that competing companies don’t bother with. There’s also loads of photographs, a few of which are new to these eyes.
