Die Tielman Brothers waren sicherlich die Vorzeige-Band des Indorock. Die Indone-sier, die 1959 die erste Roclen`Roll-Single in den Niederlanden herausbrachten, zogen schon lenge vor Jimi Hendrix eine Bi.ih-nenshow ab, die den Gitarrenmeister ei-gentlich iibertrumpfte, denn die Burschen waren Meister des Gymnastik-Rocks (was vor allem auch in Deutschland fiir Furore sorgte). Nun haben Bear Family diese kul-tige 10" (limitiert auf nur 500 Exemplare) aus dem Jahr 1960 mit den beiden Bo-nustracks „Record Hop" und „Swing It Up" verOfFentlicht. Natiirlich - bedenkt man das Jahr - darf eine Herzschmerznummer wie „O Sole Mio" nicht fehlen, doch bei „18th Century Rock" und „Night Train" wird es ein wenig rockiger. Zwar konnten die Tielman Brothers nie die Brisanz ihrer Shows aufs Vinyl bannen, doch diese ge-falvolle Scheibe ist weitaus mehr als nur ein Erinnerungsstuck an eine !angst ver-gessene Ara der deutsch-niederlandischen Musikgeschichte.

Jaaaa, jetzt wird es gruselig. Die Geschichte des Horrorfilms ist eine ganz besondere, und oft war/ist damit entsprechende Musik verbunden gewesen. Auf dieser CD von Bear Family Records, mit einem vierundzwanzig Seiten starken Booklet und vierunddreißig Songs soll uns das Gruseln gelehrt werden. "Von einem der auszog, das Fürchten zu lernen", ist das weit entfernt, denn – so ist es angekündigt worden – "The Shadow Knows" ist ein »Horrorfilm in Sound, der das Blut in den Adern gefrieren lässt!« Der Titelsong kommt zur Vertiefung dann auch gleich zwei Mal, einmal vom legendären Link Wray und von den großartigen Coasters! Viele dieser Stücke sind Raritäten und der Zeitraum von 1934 – 1982 wird abgedeckt.

Es war nicht nur politisch und sozial eine ganz andere Gesellschaft -Frauen mussten ihre Männer fragen, ob sie arbeiten durften; falls man Sex mit einer Frau, mit der man nicht verheiratet war, in seiner Mietswohnung hatte, konnte der Ver-mieter wegen Kuppelei bestraft werden -sondern natürlich auch musikalisch. Soeben war der Rock'n"Roll über den Atlantik nach Deutschland vorgedrungen und in vielen Clubs tauchten plötzlich braune Musiker auf, die aus Holland, tatsächlich aber aus Indone-sien kamen, wo unsere Nachbarn einmal Ko-lonien besessen hatten.

Op een of ander manier is het erg dat je voor de beste heruitgaven van Nederlandse muziek over de grens moet en dan kom je automatisch uit bij Bear Family dat twintig jaar geleden al uitstekende Tielman Brothers CD’s uitbracht. De Duitse re-issue reus brengt nu hun Tielman On Stage (in tegenstelling tot wat je op basis van de titel zou denken géén live plaat) 25 cm LP op Imperial, NL (ILPT 103) uit 1961 opnieuw uit in een gelimiteerde uitgave van 500 exemplaren op doorzichtig wit vinyl, een plaat waarvan je vandaag de dag niet moet hopen ze nog als mint exemplaar op de rommelmarkt te vinden, ook al omdat ze destijds eigenlijk voor geen meter verkocht, zo heb ik mij toch laten vertellen.

Ein zusätzlicher Geschmack wird durch die Tatsache hinzugefügt, dass sie auch in einer Vinyl-Version, oft nur in Vinyl, veröffentlicht werden. So haben wir dieses Album, das in der Serie "Vinyl Club Exclusives" veröffentlicht wurde. Man möchte ein "schwarzes" Album schreiben, aber das ist nicht ganz richtig, denn seine Farbe ist ...pink. Andererseits ist die Musik eine Mischung aus Rock'n'Roll und Hillbilly. Autor ist der britische Schlagzeuger Tony Crombie und seine The Roc-kers. Die Band wurde 1956 in Portsmouth gegründet, aber der Leiter kam aus London und hatte bereits mehrere Jahre Erfahrung in Jazzbands, darunter Ronnie Scott. Nachdem er jedoch mehrere amerikanische Filme mit neuen, in den USA geborenen Klängen gesehen hatte, den sogenannten Rock'n'Roll, beschloss er, in diese Richtung zu gehen.

The music of William Orville “Lefty” Frizzell (1928-1975), one of the most influential honky-tonk singers of all time, has long been a cornerstone of the Bear Family catalogue. The German reissue specialists first compiled the Frizzell oeuvre in 1984 as a 14-LP box set, updating that in 1992 on 12 CDs. Now, more than 25 years later, the Bears have returned to the country-and-western troubadour’s career for the most definitive chronicle ever. An Article from Life: The Complete Recordings has every one of Frizzell’s original recordings presented on 20 CDs in a package also including a comprehensive hardcover book.
Inspired by his hero, “the singing brakeman” Jimmie Rodgers, Lefty (so named for his left hook in a schoolyard fight, not a Golden Gloves match as legend has sometimes had it) had sensed by age twelve that his destiny was in song. In his earliest performing gigs, he began to broaden his repertoire to tunes by Ernest Tubb and Roy Acuff. Born in Texas and raised in Arkansas, the local talent made waves on radio in New Mexico. While his theme song was Ernest Tubb’s “I Ain’t Going Honky-Tonking Any More,” he not only kept honky-tonking, but made the country-and-western style his own. His burgeoning career was almost derailed in 1947 when he was found guilty of statutory rape. He served six-months in the Roswell, NM county jail, and while there wrote the words that would later be fashioned into one of his most memorable songs. “I Love You, I’ll Prove It a Thousand Ways” was addressed to his wife Alice, who was left behind with their daughter Lois while he served his time.

While his theme song was Ernest Tubb’s “I Ain’t Going Honky-Tonking Any More,” he not only kept honky-tonking, but made the country-and-western style his own. His burgeoning career was almost derailed in 1947 when he was found guilty of statutory rape. He served six-months in the Roswell, NM county jail, and while there wrote the words that would later be fashioned into one of his most memorable songs. “I Love You, I’ll Prove It a Thousand Ways” was addressed to his wife Alice, who was left behind with their daughter Lois while he served his time.

Nevertheless, he didn’t make it into the Country Music Hall of Fame until 1982 and, for reasons I’ve never quite figured out, he is not as well known or loved by the public today as, say, Williams or George Jones.
He continues to be revered by his fellow musicians, however. “The soul of Hank Williams, the appeal of Johnny Cash, and the charisma of Elvis Presley. He had it all,” said the late, great Merle Haggard, one of Frizzell’s biggest fans. “The impact he had on country music, and on me, is not even measurable.” Indeed, Frizzell had a huge influence on many artists, including, in addition to Haggard, Randy Travis, John Anderson, and Willie Nelson. (Nelson recorded a whole album called To Lefty from Willie). Roy Orbison paid homage to him by choosing the name Lefty Wilbury for himself when he joined the Traveling Wilburys.
